About ABS filament

ABS, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene is a thermoplastic praised for its strength and durability. ABS filament is one of the first plastics to be used with industrial 3D printers and has since remained an essential filament material type. The material has high impact resistance and good rigidity at a great price. Due to ABS’ chemical and extreme heat resistance, the filament withstands wear and tear and can for example be used as a part for a dishwasher. ABS filament is a non-biodegradable material that can be melted down and reshaped repeatedly. ABS is used for everyday objects and is also the material used for making Lego blocks.

3D printing with ABS filament

3D printing with ABS filament can be challenging, however, if you follow the specific printing requirements, you can be a pro in no time. ABS filament has a print temperature of 230-260 degrees and requires a heated bed. It is always a good idea to print the temperature of the specific ABS filament that you buy. A few test prints will allow you to find out the perfect combination of 3D printer settings to create sturdy and consistent 3D prints. ABS filament does cool down extremely fast, hence a heated bed will slow down the process and avoid any warping. It is best to buy an enclosure if you are planning on printing with ABS filament to trap heat during printing. Additionally, it is important to ensure you are in a space that is well ventilated as ABS will tend to produce fumes and a slight smell during printing.

ABS filament adhesion

Make sure to also point your focus on the adhesiveness of ABS filament and make sure that the layer is properly attached to the print bed as this can sometimes prove to be tricky. However, with adhesion spray or Kapton tape, you can print models that will attach properly and be easy to peel off later. The spray can also be washed off the print bed and the tape effortlessly removed.

ABS filament post-processing

Once ABS filament has been printed it is opaque, feels smooth, and looks shiny. Another great advantage of using ABS filament is the post-processing possibilities. ABS filament parts can easily be drilled into, filed, or glued. Use acetone (vapor) to meld the ABS filament a bit, softening the layers and making them blend into each other, creating the illusion of an injection molded part. If you would like to print a large 3D part, melding will allow you to join pieces to create a larger ABS model.
